South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham unleashed on the Republican party and GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump during the Washington Press Club Foundation Dinner Thursday night.

The former GOP hopeful, who dropped out of the 2016 race last December, said he feared Democrat Hillary Clinton would inevitably win the White House because “my party has gone bats— crazy.”

He also joked that it would be possible to get away with murdering GOP hopeful Ted Cruz if it happened in the Senate.

“If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you,” Graham said in reference to the Texas senator’s unpopular reputation in Washington.

But by the time he got around to Trump, Graham was out of jokes.

“I don’t know how I can best describe Donald Trump, but I can say this, that I don’t think he understands what makes America great. And I know I’m supposed to be funny, but I’m not really happy about where the country is right now,” Graham said. “I could make a million Donald Trump jokes, and I have. But our party and our country is going to have to up its game.”
