This year, it was a limited-edition silver snakeskin Chanel bag that he won at the Heart Fund's Generous People Dinner Gala in Cannes – for which he bid a whooping $18,000. If this is a belated Mother's Day gift, there's no denying that the hefty price tag more than makes up for its late arrival.

Dropping thousands on a Chanel bag for mom in Cannes? Just call it a DiCaprio family tradition. Leo did the same last year, spending $10,000 on the bag after engaging in a (friendly) bidding war with none other than Paris Hilton.

More often than not, Leo's left his lady of the moment at home and brought his mother as his date to various movie premieres over the years. He had mom on his arm all the way back in 1993 for the premiere of What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which garnered Leo his first-ever Oscar nomination.

HE'S THANKED HER IN ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES

When Leo was on his awards season winning streak earlier this year, there were two names that always popped up in his acceptance speeches (well, besides Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñarritu): George and Irmelin. "To my parents, thank you for listening to an overly-ambitious, slightly-annoying 13-year-old kid who wanted to go on auditions every day after school," he said at the SAG Awards. "I would not be standing here without you."

HE WISHED HER A HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM THE BAFTA STAGE

When he's not thanking his parents, he's calling them out in other ways – and yes, typically in a room chock-full of Hollywood royalty. When he won the BAFTA Award for best actor for The Revenant, he took a moment to not only thank his mom for all she had done for him over the years, but also to wish her a happy birthday. "There's one person I have to thank," DiCaprio said. "I would not be standing up here if it weren't for this person. I didn't grow up in a life of privilege – I grew up in a very rough neighborhood in East Los Angeles, and this women drove me for three hours a day to a different school to show me a different opportunity. It is her birthday today. So Mom, happy birthday. I love you very much."

He's dated a gaggle of supermodels over the years, but there's only one woman for whom DiCaprio would buy diamonds. Back when the actor was promoting his film Blood Diamond, he was asked if filming the movie had changed his diamond purchasing habits. Leo told reporters that "My mom is the only person that I would buy something like that for."

Fame may be fleeting, but DiCaprio knows family is forever. When he celebrated his 37th birthday at Avenue nightclub in N.Y.C., he was surrounded by all his favorite people: His buddies Bradley Cooper and Russell Simmons, a number of Victoria's Secret models, and of course, his mom.
