Nowadays, Lenny Kravitz is a four-time Grammy winner who has sold more than 38 million records and is preparing to release his 10th studio album.

But back in February 1990, Kravitz was Sassy magazine’s “One To Watch.”

In honor of the “Fly Away” crooner’s 50th birthday Monday, we dug up a vintage issue of the alt-teen mag, which profiled him at the age of 25. Kravitz, in the midst of promoting the Beatles-influenced album Let Love Rule, told Sassy, “People think I’m stuck in the ’60s but I’m not at all. I mean, that was the last time when this sort of feeling [the whole peace-and-love thing] was happening. But I don’t think that it should end because the ’60s are over.”

At the time, Kravitz was still married to The Cosby Show star Lisa Bonet, and their daughter, it-girl Zoe Kravitz, was just a “little baby girl.”
