"She's not letting her accident deter her from doing what she loves," says Scruggs of the pro surfer who lost her arm
After Lauren Scruggs’s propeller accident made news last December, her family heard from people all over the world who were praying for Lauren’s recovery.
Scruggs, 24, also heard from some well-known well-wishers.
In January, Giuliana Rancic Tweeted her support, and Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003, reached out as well.
The pair hit it off immediately, as Scruggs describes in her new memoir, Still Lolo. And Hamilton, 22, has become a unique support system for Scruggs, who lost her left hand in the accident.
“We were hanging out in September and I said, ‘Bethany, is there anything you can’t do? I’ve been thinking about this,’ ” Scruggs tells PEOPLE. “And she’s like, ‘No, actually not.’ It’s pretty amazing.”
Hamilton has also taught her new friend some everyday adaptations. “Bethany actually showed me how she just rolls her hair up in a bun and clips it, which I do sometimes,” says Scruggs.
But the lessons she’s learned from her Hamilton go far beyond the physical. “She’s still a pro surfer and she has one arm – she’s not letting her accident deter her from doing what she loves,” says the fashion blogger, who details the accident and its aftermath in this week’s PEOPLE magazine. “That’s a big lesson I’ve learned, not letting fear or insecurity bring you down.”
“Bethany and I even talk about doing some things together with people who’ve lost limbs,” she adds.
Robin Roberts Sends Her Best
Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts has been going through a public health battle of her own, so Scruggs says she was particularly touched when Roberts reached out to her.
“Robin would send us really encouraging emails and Bible verses – things she’s held onto in her life, like faith and family,” says Scruggs, who says her Christian faith has helped her in the aftermath of what she’s been through.
“She said to rely on God, which means a lot coming from someone going through something so difficult.”
“It was just a blessing for her to think to do that and take the time to do that. It’s another way of showing that the community of God surrounds you.”
