Now 9 years old and being raised by her father, Larry Birkhead, she’s old enough to search the Internet about her mother – which is partly why her dad says he’s chosen to be honest about her mother’s past.
“We go back all the time and we go to [Anna Nicole’s] grave,” he tells Entertainment Tonight in a new interview. “We visit and I tell Dannielynn stories about her mom. I don’t sugar coat it. I say there are some things that your mom did and you know I try to make her learn from it.”
Birkhead says he aims to paint an accurate picture of Anna Nicole, and reiterates to their daughter many of the good qualities her mom possessed.
“There is YouTube these days and that stuff’s out there and my daughter likes to Google already and I’m trying to keep her from it,” he says. “She’ll see things, you know, when she grows up, that not necessarily all true. Was [Anna Nicole] wild? Yeah, sure. But [she was] a great lady, and a great mom.”
Now far removed from the fast-paced lifestyle he shared with Smith before she died in 2007, Birkhead, 42, says Dannilynn enjoys a typical childhood. Pastimes include playing Minecraft and traveling with her dad to the Bahamas, where she and her half-brother Daniel, who died three days after her birth, are buried.
“I think [about] how far she’s come, and all the craziness that swirled around her and that she was just, really none the wiser. Just a little kid doing her thing like she’s supposed to be,” he says. “That’s the one thing that I’m most proud of that I’ve done – trying to keep everything as normal as I can, in just a really crazy, crazy situation.”
He also says Dannilynn reminds him of her late mother at her best – and is “so proud” of his little girl.
“I look at her and she’s my everything,” he says. “When I see how big she’s become, I’m just so proud of her She reminds me so much of her mom and as she gets older, and her features are changing, it’s just like having a little miniature Anna Nicole running around in so many ways.”
