Lamar Odom is confronting his demons head-on.

The former NBA star recently checked himself into a 30-day rehab program — but before doing that, he sat down for an on-camera interview with The Doctors to discuss his decision. After his discharge, he will also film a follow-up interview with the show that will air in January.

In a sneak peek at the first segment airing on Friday, the 37-year-old former NBA player sits down with Dr. Travis Stork to discuss why he decided to seek treatment more than a year after his overdose.

“There’s one goal right now: The one goal is for Lamar to get through his recovery,” says Stork. “When he is done, when he is out of rehab, we’ll have him back on the show. … We’re going to talk to him about how rehab was, because that’s all that matters right now.”

The former athlete was hospitalized in October 2015 after being found unconscious at a Nevada brothel. The episode will cover his near-fatal overdose and subsequent coma — as well as what his life was like in the months that followed.

“There have been reports that you still have been using substances,” Stork asks Odom in the clip. “Is that true or false?”

While the sneak peek doesn’t reveal Odom’s answer, a source told PEOPLE this week that the star — who is also planning on filming a reality show about his road to recovery — is doing “extraordinarily well” in rehab.

“It’s a substance abuse program, but he was not abusing drugs when he went in,” said one insider. “He is clean. He wants to stay clear and focused. With his divorce from Khloé being finalized and the holidays coming up, he doesn’t want to slip up. He’s trying to take care of himself. He really wants to be better.”

Odom’s episode of The Doctors airs Friday (check local listings).
