Being five months pregnant with her second baby is not stopping pro volleyballer and model Gabrielle Reece from staying on top of her game.

“She’s feeling good, training hard, working out like an animal,” her husband, big wave surfer Laird Hamilton, 43, told PEOPLE in Malibu at Saturday’s premiere of his documentary Path of Purpose. (The film chronicles Hamilton’s 500-mile trek across the Hawaiian Islands to raise funds for a friend making a film about his autistic son.)

“She gets checked out every week to make sure it’s good – she’s not foolhardy,” Hamilton says of Reece, 37, who spent the weekend in Chicago playing on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. She is also offering fitness tips for expectant mothers as a correspondent on the Today show until her due date in January.

“She’s in the best shape of her life, and she’s really happy with the way she’s playing,” says Hamilton.

What Reece and Hamilton are not doing is finding out the sex of their new baby.

“It’s probably the single greatest surprise we have in our lives, and to find out early for whatever reason – justifying the color of a bedroom or something – to me is kind of lame,” Hamilton said.

“Everybody goes, ‘Oh, you’re gonna have a boy,’ and I go, ‘You know what? I’m probably just gonna have a bunch of giant girls, these giant Amazon daughters.’,” he said. “I just want to have a healthy child and raise a good person.”

The baby’s name is also still up in the air. “I’m the last-second guy. Gabby has a couple names in mind. She likes Brodie a lot. If it’s a boy, I’d like to call him Ledge or something – Steep Ledge, or middle name Steep, first name Ledge.”

He adds, “It’ll come, it’ll happen, that’s the way it’s supposed to, and it always does. And names are super-important.”

The couple’s daughter Reece, who turns 4 in October, is ready for a new sister or brother – sort of.

“She says she is, but she’s not,” says her doting dad. “She is the center of the universe right now, and when the next one comes along it’s gonna rock her little boat a little bit. But it’ll be great, Reece could really use it. It will be great for her.”
