'Vomit Artist' Millie Brown Defends Herself After Controversial SXSW Show with Lady Gaga
Demi Lovato, among others, have come out against Brown's art
When something makes Millie Brown sick, she just puts it into her art.
The 27-year-old from London made waves at South by Southwest when she vomited colored milk on Lady Gaga as part of the latter’s performance. Now she’s defending herself and her controversial art form.
Brown, whose paintings sell for around $20,000, told Elle that she discovered her unique talent when she was 17.
“I started exploring performance art and it was an idea that came to be because I wanted to use my body to create a performance that was about the beauty from inside out. I came up with the idea of actually vomiting a rainbow using my body as a tool to create paintings.”
Not everyone’s on board with Brown’s work, though.
Demi Lovato came out against Brown and Gaga’s performance in a series of tweets, adding that “Whether we intend to or not, artists influence people of ALL ages and unfortunately what people see, people do,” to the above tweet.
Brown told Elle that her performance “is not a statement about eating disorders in any way. I think the whole bulimia thing – it’s important for people to know that I’m not trying to promote it.”
Regardless of Brown’s stance, it’s a thorny issue. People have accused Gaga of promoting “bulimia chic,” and as Lovato says:
