9 Times Celebs Broke Up and Were Actually Really Pleasant About It
LEA DELARIA & CHELSEA FAIRLESS
Just days after she was scheduled to get married, the Orange Is the New Black star announced on Instagram that she and her longtime love were calling it quits. Alongside the video — which features the couple's engagement photo, in which they're superimposed next to Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor — DeLaria and Fairless revealed that the split was "amicable." "Please exclude us from the tragic and basic celebrity breakup narrative,” they wrote. “We were happy together for four years and will remain in each other’s lives. In fact, we look forward to finding new ways to torture each other.”
LADY GAGA & TAYLOR KINNEY
After countless picture-perfect moments and a beautiful Valentine's Day engagement, the world was heartbroken to learn Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney ended their engagement after five years together. But, Gaga assured us that it's going to be okay – in a statement on Instagram, she wrote, "Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break. We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We're just like everybody else and we really love each other." We're rooting you on!
ALEX PETTYFER & MARLOES HORST
The Magic Mike star and model both took to Instagram with the news, which sounds like a bad idea – but just wait. "I wouldn't normally do this as I like to keep my life private, Despite what may be written, Marloes and I split up due to her being a crazy hot supermodel and her and my work just keeping us apart. It was a mutual decision, We are incredibly close and love each other tremendously!!! We are best friends and who knows what the future holds. #shewillalwaysbefamily #factisgreaterthanfiction," wrote Pettyfer. Added Horst: "Despite of what some papers may say, Alex and I split due to our busy schedules. It's [saddening] to read these negative articles since we are very close and love each other dearly! So we took it into our own hands to say it was a mutual decision, we are best friends and will always remain each others family. #loveisalwaystheanswer"
GWYNETH PALTROW & CHRIS MARTIN
The two famously announced their separation on Paltrow's Goop website under the heading "Conscious Uncoupling." Their statement read, "We have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much, we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been." She even recently said on Today, "We're a family. Even though we're not in a romantic relationship, we're a true family and we like to do things to reinforce that we're a family for the children and for each other."
HILARY DUFF & MIKE COMRIE
"They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives," Duff's rep said in a statement to PEOPLE back in January 2014. "They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son." The former couple did stay true to their word about remaining close, even going on a Valentine's Day family vacation to Hawaii together with their son just a few weeks after announcing their split.
CAITLYN & KRIS JENNER
Kris and Caitlyn Jenner (who was living as Bruce as the time) continued filming Keeping Up with the Kardashians – and co-parenting daughters Kendall and Kylie – throughout their separation. At the time, Kris told PEOPLE they were "just trying to be grown-ups about the situation ... We have children together, and we have families and memories and holidays and traditions. I don't want to give that up. I don't want him to take that away from me, and I don't want to take that away from him." She continued, "We work together to make sure that we're both happy. We are well-rounded human beings that are going through a tough time. You just do the best that you can."
MIRANDA LAMBERT & BLAKE SHELTON
JON HAMM & JENNIFER WESTFELDT
"With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history," the couple told PEOPLE in a joint statement this past September. "We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward." Just a few weeks later at the Emmys, he thanked her (along with their dog, Cora). "It's incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here, so I want to thank the people to whom I owe an incredible debt," he said. "Cora and Jen, thank you all very much, I would not be standing here without you." (It's no surprise they have since been spotted spending time together.)
JENNIFER GARNER & BEN AFFLECK
The world’s collective heart broke in summer 2015 when Garner and Affleck announced they were divorcing after 10 years of marriage, but they made it clear that they would be keeping their three children their top priority. "We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children, whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time," the couple told PEOPLE in a joint statement. In the months following, the former couple has frequently been seen spending time as a family and even going on vacation together. After Garner’s revealing interview with Vanity Fair about the their marriage, Affleck told The New York Times, "Jen's great. She's a great person." He added, "We're on great terms. I just saw her this morning, so that's the reality that I live in."
