Laci's Parents Flee Grisly Court Photos

The couple leave the Scott Peterson trial room as pictures of her remains are shown

Laci Peterson’s mother and stepfather left the Redwood City, Calif., courtroom Tuesday as prosecutors in the Scott Peterson double-murder trial displayed graphic pictures of her and her fetus’s remains, reports PEOPLE.

Scott Peterson, 31, who appears as to have lost weight, did not look at the large screen where the photos of his wife and unborn son, Conner, were displayed.

After having earlier listened to a polygraph expert’s testimony on their son-in-law’s denial that he had an affair, Laci’s parents, Sharon Rocha and Ron Grantski, who have been present throughout the trial, fled the courtroom as the pictures were shown.

Describing the discovery of the Petersons’ unborn infant, witness Michael Looby testified that he and his wife were walking their dog along the shore of San Francisco Bay on April 13, 2003, when he came upon a body in a marshy area.

“It was a body of a small baby,” Looby said, adding that he and his wife walked to a nearby home and asked the residents to call 911. The day before a strong storm had hit the area, and Looby testified that he “was surprised by how much debris there was left behind.”

Then, he said, “something attracted the dog’s attention. I knew what it was right away. … I recognized that it was a face. It was obvious that the baby was dead.”

Laci’s body washed ashore a day later, not far from where the fetus was found.

Last week, prosecutors focused on witnesses who testified about Peterson’s affair with Fresno, Calif., massage therapist Amber Frey – an affair they allege drove him to kill Laci on or around Dec. 24, 2002, and then dump her body in the Bay.

The defense contends that someone else, possibly a homeless person or persons, abducted the 28-year-old near the Modesto home she shared with the former fertilizer salesman as she walked their dog, and held her captive before killing her and dumping her body to frame Scott, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
