Nick Lachey is getting some expert help with his upcoming FOX sitcom: King of the Hill writer Etan Cohen, who will pen and executive produce the singer’s show.

With shades of retired sports hero Sam Malone (Ted Danson) on Cheers, Lachey, 31, will play a retired baseball player returning home to his dysfunctional family, reports Variety. While Lachey is still best known on TV for his collaboration with wife Jessica Simpson on the MTV reality series Newlyweds, he is slowly branching out on his own.

This season, so far, he’s guest-starred on Charmed and Hope and Faith and will soon show up on his own MTV reality show, at this point called The Nick Lachey Project.

And while an earlier ABC TV pilot that Lachey shot didn’t fly, he was still able to flex some acting chops with a cameo in the movie version of Bewitched, with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.

As for exercising his pipes, he’s currently recording his second solo album, says the trade paper.
