Cynics say her union with Kris Humphries was a stunt, but friends say she realized she'd made the wrong decision

In the days since Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from her husband of just 72 days, Kris Humphries, the reality star has been dogged by reports that the union was a hoax.

But those close to Kardashian, 31, insist that her dream of marrying her Prince Charming at age 30 led her down the wrong path – to the altar.

“She’s a hopeless romantic and she felt like she got her fairy tale when she turned 30,” a source close to Kardashian tells PEOPLE in its new issue.

But it didn’t take long for the excitement of the engagement, and their $6 million wedding, to wear off. “A month into New York [after the wedding], she knew she had made the wrong decision,” says the source.

“Throughout their whole engagement they were so excited for what was to come and their life together,” says another close Kardashian source. “But once they slowed down and settled into ‘real life,’ it became apparent that this wasn’t what they both thought it was.”

Kardashian, who was dating model Gabriel Aubry this time last year, and began seeing Humphries, 26, a former forward for the New Jersey Nets in November 2010, “is embarrassed about the entire thing,” says the source. “She got caught up in the fairy tale, but her heart wasn’t there in the end.”
