Khloé Kardashian & Lamar Odom: How Their Marriage Came to an End
RUSH OF LOVE
Shortly after connecting at a Los Angeles Lakers party, Khloé Kardashian Odom and Lamar Odom's whirlwind romance unfolds for the cameras as they go public with their relationship in September 2009. The pair quickly transition from casual dates to wedding planning, confirming their sudden engagement a month into their romance. "We both knew … everyone asks. 'What was it?' I have no idea, but every single feeling in my body was like, This is it," she told Ryan Seacrest about their impromptu union.
Walking down the aisle in a Vera Wang gown, the reality starlet ties the knot with Odom in front of family and friends on Sept. 27, 2009, in Beverly Hills, Calif. The lavish ceremony was featured during a record-breaking episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and boasted a celeb-studded guest list – Ryan Seacrest, Kelly Osbourne, Chelsea Handler and Odom's Laker teammate Kobe Bryant. "Khloé and Lamar's wedding was one of the most magical nights of my life," sister Kourtney said of the extravagant affair. It's the first marriage for the E! star and her NBA player hubby, who has two children (Destiny, 13, and Lamar Jr., 10) with ex-girlfriend Liza Morales. In 2006 Morales and Odom sadly lost their third child, Jayden, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
The 2009-2010 NBA season ends with a slam dunk for the pro baller: The Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, clinching the team a back-to-back championship victory. Khloé proudly cheers on her husband throughout his winning streak, sitting courtside at games and making an appearance at the Lakers's parade celebration. Lamar's stellar performance even earns him the coveted title of NBA's Sixth Man of the Year.
Lamar, who had a troubled childhood, finds a natural fit with his new in-laws, becoming a regular staple on Keeping Up with the Kardashians and joining the busy brood on the red carpet, including the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. "Lamar doesn't have a lot of family," his wife explained to to E! News. "My family loves Lamar, and he is obsessed with them."
A BUMPY ROAD
The Odoms look to start a family of their own but encounter difficulties, sparking rumors of fertility issues, which Khloé has vehemently denied. "It's so hard. I never knew about ovulation and the limited amount of time you have to get pregnant. I never knew about that. No one ever taught me that," she confessed to Hoda Kotb during a 2011 hosting gig on the Today show.
KEEPING IT REAL
As the Kardashians continue to dominate the TV airwaves, the couple agrees to their own reality spin-off, Khloé and Lamar, which debuts in March 2011. "It's been an option since we got married," Khloé said about the hit series, which also features her younger brother Rob. "But we wanted to enjoy our first year in private." The show runs for two seasons, giving viewers a candid – and hilarious – look into their everyday life together.
Midway through the 2011 NBA season, Lamar's days with the Lakers quickly come to a halt as he finds himself at the center of a multi-player trade, which lands him with the Dallas Mavericks – a move that doesn't quite sit well with his wife. "We are all sad but positive energy gets you farther then negative," she . While Khloé eventually embraces the Texas lifestyle, her husband struggles to hold court in his new role and returns to Los Angeles in 2012, this time joining the Clippers, who first drafted him in 1999. After playing 82 games in L.A., Lamar is currently a free agent.
In April 2011, the couple joins forces to create their own signature fragrance, Unbreakable. "I can't get enough of it, and what I like about it the most is the more I spray it, the more I want to wear it. It doesn’t get too offensive if I put too much on," Khloé said of the unisex scent. During the 2012 holiday season, the pair unveils Unbreakable Joy, the follow-up to their enticing elixir.
As speculation of their relationship's demise begins to surface in 2012, Khloé shuts down any rumors of a breakup, posting a number of PDA-filled photos on her Instagram and Twitter accounts. "There's no place like home!!!" she captioned a photo of an anticipated reunion with Lamar. Further showing their solidarity, the reality star also shares a snapshot of her family's newest addition: boxer puppy, Bernard.
THE FINAL FACTOR
While Lamar strives to find a rhythm with the L.A. Clippers, 2012 also finishes on a sad note for Khloé, who gives up her cohosting duties on The X Factor, blaming "a busy schedule" for her departure. "I've never hosted anything in my life," she said. "So, to go from nothing to being thrown into live TV, it was really hard," she revealed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, adding there's "no bad blood" between her and the singing competition's head honcho, Simon Cowell.
Things get even rockier for the pair in 2013: In addition to being rarely seen together at events (they were last spotted at Kim's June 2 baby shower), a claims their charity organization Cathy's Kids – founded in 2004 after Lamar's mother passed away from cancer – "promises money for cancer research [but] has not given a dime in grant money to any cancer entity in its eight-year history." In a statement on her blog, Khloé defended their foundation, writing: "It is unfortunate that my husband has been the target of an attack on athletes’ charities, although he has personally contributed approximately $2.2 million to his foundation, Cathy’s Kids, to fulfill its charitable purposes that include helping underprivileged inner-city youth."
From cheating rumors to drug abuse, the duo encounters the biggest obstacle in their four-year marriage. In August, sources reveal the basketball star's substance problems have created a major divide between the couple. "It's a really hard time for Khloé," the source told PEOPLE. "She's kept this secret for almost two years trying to save Lamar and their marriage." Following his arrest for a DUI, Odom checks himself into a rehabilitation center. "He realized he needs help," a second source said to PEOPLE. One day later, however, he checks out.
Things start to look up for the pair – in November they head to couples therapy and he seems to get his career back on track – but on Dec. 13, a source tells PEOPLE that Khloé has decided to file for divorce. "She's been holding out hope but she has to look out for herself," the source explains. "She realized it's the best thing to move on."
