Kerry Washington on Ignoring Divorce Rumors: 'I Don't Refute Them Because I Don't Talk About My Personal Life'
Although she didn't confirm or deny divorce rumors, Washington did emphasize that her private life is not up for discussion
In case it wasn’t clear, Kerry Washington has no interest in speaking about her personal life.
The actress made an appearance at the New Rules of Social Stardom panel during the SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival in Austin and explained why she won’t acknowledge rumors that she and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha had hit a rocky patch, E! reports.
“Social media has actually been great for [other celebrities] relationships with the weeklies or the gossip sites because people say things and they say, ‘That’s not true!’ So I’m thinking in some ways, it’s been great because people are able to maintain their voice,” Washington, 39, said. “It’s a little different for me because I don’t talk about my personal life.”
She continued, explaining that when she says “I don’t talk about my personal life,” that’s exactly what she means – including any rumors that might be swirling.
“That means not only did I not tell you when I was getting married, it also means if somebody has rumors about what’s going on in my marriage, I don’t refute them, because I don’t talk about my personal life,” the Scandal star added.
Not only does Washington refuse to discuss her home life, the actress doesn’t show it off either. While she frequently shows up on the red carpet alone, the notoriously private pair did make a rare public appearance at last year’s Met Ball in New York City.
Still, a source close to the couple told PEOPLE last May that the couple prefers to keep a low profile.
“They’re homebodies and really weird about who they let in their circle,” the source said. “Every now and then they’ll go out to a movie at ArcLight, but they just hang out at their place.”
