Before he married Kerry Washington on June 24, Nnamdi Asomugha was a name known primarily to football fans.

But tying the knot with the Scandal star, 36, will surely thrust the athlete, 31, into the spotlight.

Here are three things to know about Asomugha’s life on and off the football field:

1. He’s got his own foundation dedicated to helping the less fortunate.
Established in 2010, the Asomugha Foundation was created “with a desire to have positive impact on the disadvantaged youth in the U.S. and the underprivileged orphans and widows in Africa through education and empowerment,” says its website. The organization is based on the belief that “education is essential for success and longevity.”

2. He’s just 31 but has played professional football for 11 years. Though Asomugha currently plays as a cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers, he was drafted in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders and later went on play for the Philadelphia Eagles.

3. He can act, too! According to IMDB, Asomugha made his television debut when he appeared in a 2008 episode of the sitcom, The Game. In 2009, he appeared in one episode of Friday Night Lights and most recently, he played himself in an episode of comedian Nick Kroll’s Kroll Show.
