Keri Hilson is speaking out in defense of Spokane, Washington, NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal, who has allegedly been lying about being African American for years.
“Let’s just all thank #RachelDolezal. Identity, pathological, & parental issues aside, she’s doing more than most of us do for ourselves,” Hilson Tweeted on Friday.
Dolezal‘s parents sparked a media firestorm when they told local media that she not African American, which she had previously claimed.
The “Pretty Girl Rock” singer, 32, wrote a series of Tweets on Friday and Saturday sharing her opinions about Dolezal.
“It is really weird tho,” she said, later adding, “I’m not sayin she doesn’t have serious ISSUES, I’m just sayin don’t knock her intentions or discredit her efforts. @NAACP stands by her work.”
The NAACP issued their support for Dolezal on Friday through a statement shared on their website. “One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership,” they said.
After backlash from her many followers, Hilson said she was sharing her “personal opinion,” and others “don’t need to agree.”
“Why would you ever praise a cultural appropriator and oppressor,” one user Tweeted at Hilson.
“I don’t defend her, I just don’t like to assume or pass judgement on people’s hearts. WE don’t really know her motives. Only GOD,” Hilson said.
Dolezal’s mother, Ruthanne, told the Spokesman-Review that her 37-year-old daughter started to “disguise herself” after her family adopted four African-American children.
When confronted with the allegations Thursday, Dolezal skirted around questions about her race, telling the Spokesman-Review “That question is not as easy as it seems.” She also told local station KREM that she identifies as black.
Dolezal’s adopted brother (who is of African-American descent) also claimed that she had told him not to “blow her cover.” Dolezal and her family have reportedly been estranged for a number of years.
Hilson is focusing on the work done by Dolezal, rather than her alleged lies.
“Hey, she got outta bed every morning & did excellent work for the advancement/equality of MY ppl,” she said. “THAT affects me. Let God handle the rest!”
