Horcruxes, muggles, and Snape might sound like gibberish to Katy Perry – and for good reason.
“I know Harry Potter, but I’ve never read the books, nor have I seen the movies because growing up, I was not allowed to read the books,” the pop star, 31, tells PEOPLE of J.K. Rowling’s cultural phenomenon.
Perry, whose parents Keith and Mary Hudson are devout Christian ministers, has been vocal about being raised in a strict household.
“Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to have any fantastical, enchanting stuff around me,” she explains. “It’s funny that now I’m doing a little bit of a magic-potion-themed perfume.”
Indeed, the “Dark Horse” singer named her fragrance Mad Potion. Even though the vanilla and musk perfume might prove seductive, Perry insists she only believes in casting positive spells.

“Well, only use your powers for good,” she says when asked about her dream charm. “But I think there would be a lot more acceptance, compassion, and empathy if I could [practice magic]. Because the world is going through a lot of stuff right now.”
