The end of their marriage came quickly but, so far, not bitterly for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

As their daughter Suri, 6, spends time with each of them separately, the exes have worked out a “civilized routine,” a source tells PEOPLE in the magazine’s new issue, on newsstands Friday.

Cruise, 50, and Holmes, 33, “are talking,” the source says. “They are both going to do what’s best for Suri.”

So far, that has included working out a smooth way to manage transitions for their little girl, who has spent her summer exploring New York City with her mom, who has primary custody, and taking trips to the Hamptons and Disney World with her dad.

But the vacation treats will soon be over: In September, Suri will start private school near her home in Manhattan.

Cruise and Holmes had previously opted to home-school their daughter because of the family’s constant travel, but Holmes wanted Suri to enroll in school “to have that sort of stability and consistency in her life, says another source – and Cruise is fine with her decision.
