On Friday morning, Today marked Matt Lauer’s 10-year anniversary on the show with an appearance by a surprise guest: Katie Couric.

In a pre-taped segment, Couric stood outside her CBS studio – where she debuted as Evening News anchor in September – and said she’d looked up the appropriate gift for the occasion.

“The 10th is metal or tin,” she said, “so I made this for you.”

She held up bird fashioned from tin-foil, so, she said, “You can soar to new heights.”

She also said she hadn’t had a chance to miss Lauer, since a large billboard of him and Couric’s successor, Meredith Vieira, hangs across the street from her studio.

Next, Couric stopped people on the street to ask if they could identify the man on the billboard. “He’s running for mayor,” said one.

“Thanks, Katie,” Lauer said with a laugh after watching the segment. “We miss you around here, as well.”
