Kate Winslet redefines complicated relationships in her new romantic drama Labor Day.

The film tells the story of a woman and her son housing an escaped convict (Josh Brolin). The situation becomes increasingly dangerous when the family starts developing a bond with their unexpected guest.

PEOPLE has an exclusive look at the film, based on Joyce Maynard’s novel of the same name, before it hits theaters on Jan. 31. In this clip, Adele (Winslet) works to mask her feelings for Brolin’s character while convincing him to stay in her home.

Whether in Titanic or Hamlet, love never seems to come easily for Winslet’s characters.
