Spoiler alert: Kate Hudson’s relationship with fiancé Matthew Bellamy may not be like the plot of one of her rom-coms.

After a recent sighting hushed news that Hudson, 34, and the Muse rocker, 35, hit a rough patch, a source tells PEOPLE that they’re just another couple trying to make it work.

“They have bumps in the road like anyone else, but it’s nowhere to what people blew it up to be,” says the source. “Kate is very independent, and Matt is a musician … His life is touring.”

Of course, their relationship has always been unconventional, given their careers. “They make time to see each other,” adds the source.

They were most recently photographed together on Friday in Los Angeles, where they looked relaxed and happy less than a month after a source told PEOPLE, “They’re not in a great place.”

Still, the couple – who got engaged in 2011 and have a 2½-year-old son, Bingham, together – aren’t rushing down the aisle.

“I’m planning nothing right now,” Hudson said in a January interview on Live! With Kelly and Michael. “I’m so busy – we’ve been so busy – and it’s been great.”
