Garry Marshall has directed just about every A-list celebrity in Hollywood. From Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman to Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries, his loyal base of actors seems to grow by the minute.

But there’s one mother-daughter duo that the director holds near and dear to his heart: Kate Hudson, 37 and Goldie Hawn, 70.

“They’re pretty much the same [person]!” Marshall tells PEOPLE at the New York premiere of Mother s Day on Thursday night.

“[They’re] both funny, have a fun time on the set and help me a lot with my gag reel!”

Happy 37th Birthday, Kate Hudson!

The pair have a long history with the acclaimed director: Marshall met Hudson when she was 7 years old while directing her mom and stepdad, Hawn and Kurt Russell, in Overboard.

And the two seem to be as close as they are similar. Hawn recently posted a sweet snap on Instagram of her baby daughter in honor of her 37th birthday, while Hudson shared that her mother is her “great confidante” on the Today show saying, “I pretty much do tell my mom everything. It’s vice versa.”

Mother s Day is in theaters now.
