Kanye West may be a college dropout, but that doesn’t mean he can’t get a Ph.D.!
The rapper revealed to French media outlet Clique last week that he will be receiving an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
“I was a gifted artist since age 5 and won national competitions and went to art school,” West, 37, said in the interview. “I’m actually getting an honorary doctorate on May 5 from the Art Institute of Chicago.”
West is no stranger to art school – he attended American Academy of Art and Chicago State University before dropping out to pursue music full time at the age of 20. He went on to work as a producer for Foxy Brown and Jay Z before releasing his debut album in 2004, aptly titled The College Dropout.
This marks the rapper’s first known honorary doctorate, although he has received plenty of awards since he left school, including 21 Grammy Awards, an NAACP Image Award and four Billboard Music Awards.
A representative for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago tells PEOPLE that they have not finalized the list of honorary degree recipients for this year’s graduation ceremony, but they would announce them later this week. The rep also declined to confirm if West was on the list of possible candidates for the honorary degree.
