Kanye West Settles Paparazzi Lawsuit, Apologizes to Videographer
The singer shook hands with the celebrity photographer after settling out of court
It’s unclear whether Ramos received any money in the settlement, but one of the terms was for West to personally apologize to him, the videographer’s lawyer, Gloria Allred, tells PEOPLE in a statement. The two were photographed shaking hands afterwards, with West flashing a rare smile.
“This case was set for trial next week on April 14, 2015,” Allred says. “However, today we filed a dismissal because the case was settled to the satisfaction of the parties. We cannot discuss the details of the settlement, except to say that one important aspect of it was an apology by Kanye West to our client, Daniel Ramos.”
The 37-year-old singer was charged with misdemeanor battery and attempted grand theft in September 2013 after he allegedly punched Ramos and wrestled his camera to the ground. West pleaded not guilty to both charges in November 2013, claiming he had acted in self-defense.
“We are very proud of our client Danny Ramos and his courage in bringing and pursuing this case which was so important to him and many other celebrity photographers,” Allred adds. “We believe that this case sent an important message. Celebrities are not above the law, and they have no right to physically attack someone simply because they were asked a question.”
