All the excitement, but no one to share it with. (At least, until the big day.)

Justin Theroux says that keeping his August wedding to Jennifer Aniston under wraps took all the excitement out of planning the ceremony.

“I wouldn’t say it was fun to plan,” Theroux told the New York Daily News. “Part of the fun of planning a wedding is telling people and we had to keep it under wraps.”

The The Leftovers star and Aniston tied the knot in front of a slew of A-listers on Aug. 5 in the backyard of their Bel Air, California, home, before jetting off to Bora Bora for their honeymoon.

As PEOPLE previously reported, the pair kept the event a surprise by telling their family and friends that they were attending Theroux’s 43rd birthday party.

Theroux told the Daily News that once the ceremony was over he was instantly less stressed.

“I noticed it almost immediately,” he said. “It was like your blood pressure goes down two PSI. It’s not like life is completely different. It’s a beautiful thing.”

The 44-year-old returned to work shortly after the pair’s tropical getaway, flying to the HBO series’ set in Austin, Texas.

“I am deeply sympathetic to him,” Theroux told the Daily News of his Leftovers character Kevin Garvey. “He finally gets his wish of a family. Like anything you wish for, it is not entirely what you wished for.”
