Nothing melts a heart in the wintertime like a couple’s skate, right?

Julianne Hough found that out with her boyfriend Brooks Laich, a forward with the NHL’s Washington Capitals, following team practice at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., on New Year’s Eve, a source tells PEOPLE.

According to an onlooker, Hough was standing rinkside with other family and friends of the team when Laich took her onto the ice and skated hand-in-hand during the family skate.

Wearing white skating boots, Hough looked “really comfortable on the ice,” says the source, who also notes the pair exchanged several loving looks throughout the day.

On center ice, the couple snapped a few selfies, followed by Laich taking several pictures of Hough in dancing poses. She and Laich then chatted with kids and families on the ice before being joined by rapper Wale, whose song “Chillin’ in D.C.” is a Laich favorite.

Hough, 26, has been dating Laich, 31, for a year. The pair were introduced by actor Teddy Sears, a mutual friend. In a Dec. 2 post on Instagram, Hough said of Laich and their dogs, “A little nature walk with the loves of my life!”

While Hough can be seen as a judge on Dancing with the Stars, Laich and the Capitals faced off against the Chicago Blackhawks on New Year’s Day at the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, scoring a 3-2 victory.
