Absence really can make the heart grow fonder!

Though actor Joshua Jackson recently relocated from L.A. to New York to star in the new television drama Fringe, his bond with girlfriend of two years Diane Kruger only seems to be getting stronger.

“We don’t live in the same city – which is great,” Kruger, 32, told PEOPLE as she and Jackson, 30, walked the red carpet at the Hennessy Artistry Finale Event at Gotham Hall in New York City Wednesday night. “I don’t see him for a couple of weeks, so when we’re together, it’s very intense.”

Jackson still seems plenty smitten himself. “It’s amazing how cheesy it is, but love makes everything simple,” the actor said. “It makes anything difficult make sense, and it makes anything easy enjoyable.”

So what s their secret?

“We were friends for many years before we dated,” said the actress, who later snuck away to a quiet VIP section inside Gotham Hall to kiss her beau. “It’s one thing to look at someone and think he’s gorgeous or handsome. We’re all looking for the one who lives up to what he promises to be and who stays around when things are not so good.”
