Prior to Scott Disick voluntarily checking into rehab over the weekend, friend of the family Jonathan Cheban jumped to his defense in an interview with PEOPLE.

The founder of the celebrity lifestyle site, tells PEOPLE, “I’m sure they can work it out. There’s three kids, he lives not that far from her. Once he gets this out of his system I’m hoping that it will be somewhat back to normal.”

Cheban adds that while Kourtney Kardashian is “pretty forgiving” and he wishes the best for the former couple, he doesn’t give Disick any advice on straightening out because he will most likely rebel and do the opposite.

“If you tell him not to then there will be two more 18-year-olds,” Cheban says of Disick, who was caught cozying up to his ex-girlfriend Chloe Bartoli this year. “Those 18-year-olds are all in it for pictures on the beach. It doesn’t necessarily mean that anything is going on.”

He continues, saying that young girls will “hang around” for the photo-ops that come with being out with anyone in the Kardashian-Jenner circle. He adds, “We’re used to all of that. We know every trick in the book. We’ve been around a long time. Everybody loves the attention.”

Kardashian and Disick split earlier this summer. After a tumultuous few months, the father of three checked into rehab after reportedly being given an ultimatum to clean up his act or face the possibility of not seeing his kids: Mason, 5, Penelope, 3, and Reign, 10 months.

Cheban adds that he would love for things to work out so that he can visit and see the family as a whole.

“They’re really the best together. They’re perfect together,” he says. “So with anybody else it would be like weird. At this point it’s hard to get with our program. I’m hoping everything works out.
