Looks like “The Daily Show” may get a new fan: Anchorman-comedian Jon Stewart and his wife, Tracey, are expecting a child, New York’s Daily News reports.

The news couldn’t have come at a much better time for Stewart, who, just a couple weeks ago, renewed his contract with Comedy Central’s satirical news show through the end of 2008. He’s been at the anchor desk since 1999, when he replaced Craig Kilborn.

“A lot of people like to get out when their show’s still going well,” Stewart said in an interview. “This (contract) gives me the opportunity to beat this thing into the ground.”

No sign of that so far. Since Stewart joined the show, the audience for the parody news show has more than doubled, according a poll by the Pew Research Center, the Associated Press reports.

Not that Stewart, a real-life news junkie, advocates relying on “The Daily Show” as your main news source. “A lot of (those viewers) are probably high,” he joked.

But as younger media consumers have started turning to more outlets, including the Internet, for their news, Stewart’s star has risen. An average of 1 million viewers are currently tuning in each night, and the show has captured several Emmys and a Peabody Award in recent years.
