Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet may not have succeeded in Finding Neverland when they costarred in the 2004 drama, but they found each other on the red carpet at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala Saturday night.

The pair embraced, and then hammed it up a bit on the red carpet before Depp headed inside to receive his Desert Palm Achievement Award.

The star, who was honored for his role as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, thanked his wife Amber Heard – on hand to present the rising star award to The Danish Girl‘s Alicia Vikander – in his acceptance speech.

“I also have to thank my wife, Amber, for putting up with me, for living with all of these character,” Depp said. “It’s hard for me, so it has to be hard for her.”

The Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala is considered the unofficial kickoff to awards show season: We’re in it now, folks, and it’s full speed until Oscars.
