Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are separating after 15 months of marriage. The actress filed for divorce on Monday citing irreconcilable differences.

The 52-year-old actor and the 30-year-old former model met playing love interests in 2011’s The Rum Diary. At the time, Depp was with girlfriend of 14 years Vanessa Paradis, the mother of his children Lily Rose, 16, and Jack, 14. They split in 2012. Heard was dating female photographer Tasya van Ree.

Depp and Heard’s on-screen romance soon transitioned off-screen and by April 2013 the pair were frequently stepping out together.

After nine months of dating, the couple revealed their engagement in January 2014. And in April of that year, Depp gushed about his fiancée when he told Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, “[Amber]’s a wonderful girl. She’s sharp as a tack, a wonderful, Southern belle and sweet as can be and good for me.”

Nearly a year following their whirlwind romance and surprise engagement rumors of relationship turmoil began to surface. However, Depp and Heard squashed all allegations when the couple got smoochy at the Jan. 10 Art of Elysium gala in L.A., where she was honored.

Weeks later, they tied the knot in a Feb. 3 2015 ceremony at their L.A. home, just days ahead of a bigger wedding that was held on Depp’s private island in the Bahamas.

“I try not to react to the horrible misrepresentation of our lives, but it is strange, and hard,” Heard told Marie Claire in November 2015. She also opened up about the joys of becoming a stepmother to Depp’s two teens, saying, “[It’s] an honor and the greatest, most surprising gift I have ever received in my life. I feel new flavors that I didn’t know existed. New colors that I didn’t know existed have been added to my life. I’m so happy.”

That same month, the Alice Through the Looking Glass actor publicly declared his love for his bride saying she has “far too many amazing qualities” to choose just one. “We connect on a lot of levels, but the first things that really got me was she’s an aficionado of the blues,” he told E! News. “She’s very, very literate. She’s a voracious reader as I have been so we connected on that level as well. And she’s kind of brilliant. I’m a lucky man.”

This year in January, Depp gave Heard a sweet shout-out while accepting the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. “I also have to thank my wife Amber for putting up with me, for living with all these characters, which can’t be easy,” he said of his transformative movie roles. “It’s hard for me – it’s got to be hard for her.”

And at the 31st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February, Depp shared how he fell in love with Heard. “She was in my head, so I tracked her down. We tracked each other down,” he told the audience. “We tracked each other down. Actually, incidentally, it was amazing. It was at the first day of press on The Rum Diary. Then we married that very day!”

News of Heard and Depp’s divorce comes over a month following the couple’s viral video apology to the Queensland court after the actress pleaded guilty to providing a false immigration document when entering Australia last May with her and Depp’s dogs.
