Johnny Depp: A Map of His Tattoos
Like all tattoo aficionados, Johnny Depp started with his arms. His reported first tattoo, a profile of a Cherokee Indian chief, sits on his right biceps. Above that is the banner "Wino Forever" – which originally said "Winona Forever" in honor of ex Winona Ryder, until the actor had it altered.
Depp's mother's name, Betty Sue, appears on a banner that's wrapped around a heart, in tribute to "the greatest lady in the world," Depp told a journalist in 1989.
Aww! Depp has the name of his firstborn, daughter Lily-Rose, tattooed over his heart. "My daughter made me understand, helped me understand, why there is life and why I should live, and why I wake up in the morning and why I want to continue this funny road I'm on," he has said. "I almost feel like I didn't really have a life before. That I didn't really live."
The number three – a "magical number for me," Depp has said – comes into play on his hands, with three rectangles on his index finger and the number tattooed on his left hand. The black crow on the back of his right hand was done in support of the documentary West of Memphis, and Depp shares the tattoo with one of the subjects of the documentary, Damien Echols. The snake symbol that sits above the crow is reportedly another tat in honor of Depp's Native American roots.
On his right arm, Depp has a sparrow with the name "Jack" – similar to Captain Jack Sparrow's tattoo in Pirates of the Caribbean. Depp has said the sparrow represents his son Jack, who was born in 2002.
BACK OF HIS ARM
The lines are the I Ching hexagram of "Wind over Heaven" – another tattoo Depp got with Damien Echols.
Depp continues to add ink: "Silence Exile Cunning," believed to be inspired by the conclusion of James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, sits above a skeleton key on his left forearm, and his right arm is adorned with a black-and-white portrait.
A bird playing cards rests above Depp's left wrist, while a variation of the traditional skull-and-crossbones sits near Depp's left elbow.
