Johnathon Schaech has nothing but respect for his exes.

The Legends of Tomorrow star opened up about his failed marriages to Christina Applegate and country singer Jana Kramer in a Reddit AMA on Monday, and also cleared up speculation surrounding his relationship with Ellen DeGeneres.

Schaech, who is now married to and shares a son with Julie Solomon Schaech, was wed to Applegate from 2001 until 2007. He and Kramer broke up just one month after getting married in 2010.

“Jana and I had a wedding but we were never married. It simply came down to this: She wasn’t ready to be married,” explained Schaech in response to a fan question. “She wanted a singing career and that was what she was focused on.”

The actor added that he was “a little bit country with Jana and a little bit rock and roll with Christina!!! And that it all worked out for the best.”

Noting that Kramer has remarried and shares a daughter with husband Michael Caussin, Schaech said that his ex “could be the fastest success ever in country music” and is “happy finally.” He added of Applegate and her husband Martyn LeNoble, with whom she has daughter Sadie, “[They] have a wonderful family.”

She’s cancer free and is an absolute hero for others and to my family,” the star said. “And me – I have Camden and Jules. And by that time, maybe by the time he reads – a sibling, I’m perfectly blessed. All the Christina Applegate and Jana Kramer fans should know – I’m rooting for them too.”

The 46-year-old, who lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his family, admitted that his divorce from Christina was “hard” because he considered the marriage a “religious experience.”

“Being raised Catholic and having parents that are still together over 50 years, I felt I failed everyone. I thought God had given up on me,” he explained. “Sex, drugs, alcohol and dark nights became who I was. I knew I needed to find someone who loved me as much as I loved them. I eventually found that in my wife, Julie.”

Schaech also used the interview to clear up his red carpet appearances with DeGeneres in the ’90s, explaining that the pair wasn’t a couple, per se.

“My manager asked me to accompany her to events,” the actor explained. “She was scared people would not watch the show, her sitcom Ellen, because she was gay. It was an honor.”

Schaech appears next as DC Comics character Jonah Hex in the Thursday, April 14th episode of Legends of Tomorrow.
