The singer is heading back to the U.S. to recover from an unknown ailment

John Mayer is singing the blues.

The crooner has canceled several shows in Europe due to illness, according to a posting on his Web site.

Mayer is “returning home to the States and a full recovery is expected under a doctor s supervision,” says the statement, which does not disclose the nature or details of his illness.

Earlier this week, Mayer played a sold out show in Copenhagen, but has cancelled his second performance in the city. Regrettably, the illness has caused his remaining European shows scheduled through this week to be cancelled as well (Amsterdam, Madrid and Manchester),” says the message. “Ticket holders should apply for refund from point of purchase.”

Mayer is scheduled to continue his tour in the United States starting July 16 in Charlotte, N.C.
