It may look like the perfect wedding, but John Legend and Chrissy Teigen‘s nuptials didn’t go off without a hitch.

Engaged for almost two years, the lovebirds were set to marry on a Southern farm before deciding to tie the knot in Italy’s Lake Como instead.

“For a minute I was like, ‘I’m going to wear cowboy boots with my dress!’ ” Teigen, 28, tells the spring 2014 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings, which includes an eight-page spread of the September ceremony. “Then I realized, that’s just not me.”

Instead, the model selected Christian Louboutin peep-toes (lined with something blue) for her destination wedding, during which she donned two white gowns and a red show-stopper. But even then, not everything went according to plan, the couple reveals.

Storms in Ohio delayed the flights of Legend’s family members, pushing the festivities back a few hours. Fortunately, the jet-setting guests – including bridesmaid and Teigen’s fellow Sports Ilustrated Swimsuit Issue model Brooklyn Decker – were game to keep the party going.

“They had cocktails for four hours!” Teigen tells the magazine about how their friends and relatives passed the time.

Their patience paid off. Legend, 35, and Teigen wed in an elegant ceremony officiated by the singer’s uncle and danced as Stevie Wonder performed “Ribbon in the Sky.” Not surprisingly, Legend also serenaded his bride with “All of Me,” bringing them full-circle to the time they first met while filming a music video in 2006.

“The shoot was pretty up close and personal, and I got to know her big personality – she’s very fun, very clever, very gregarious,” Legend says in Weddings. “It’s not the normal way to court someone, but hey, it worked.”
