Joe Jonas and rumored girlfriend Gigi Hadid made their first official public appearance on Thursday night – though they wouldn’t be pictured together on the red carpet.

The pair stepped out to support Joe’s parents Kevin and Denise and brother Nick at the 2015 Father of the Year Awards to benefit the American Diabetes Association. Jonas, 25, and Hadid, 20, who have been friends for years, were very touchy-feely throughout the evening, complete with several kisses during the awards ceremony.

But even though they seemed very happy together, there was still one person who had yet to make up their mind about the coupling – Joe’s mom.

“I don’t know yet. I have to see,” Denise told reporters at the Beverly Hills event when asked if Hadid has Mom’s stamp of approval yet. “We’ll see! Check with me in a month.”

And while she had one eye on Joe and Gigi, she was also thinking about son Nick, 22, who recently split from girlfriend Olivia Culpo after almost two years together.

“Of course you do,” Mama Jonas said about wanting to protect her sons from getting hurt. “But that whole relationship thing, I try to stay out of as a mom because all of my children’s girlfriends and friends become part of my family and my heart. I love all of them. And I try to stay out of it.”

However, all that pales in comparison to the importance of Nick’s health. Nick was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 13 and has gone through ups and downs with the disease ever since.

“I saw his body emaciated – that’s when I got really concerned,” Mama Jonas revealed. “The first question he asked our doctor was, ‘Am I going to die?’ And on the way to the hospital, he wrote the song ‘A Little Bit Longer’ with my husband. He said, ‘You know Dad, the first thing I asked was ‘Why me?’ and then he said, ‘Well, why not me?’ ”

Added brother Joe, “It was difficult throughout the years. But now has a pretty good handle on it. It’s something you never really become a pro at, but it’s a daily thing. And I’ve always been impressed about how he’s been able to live life through this.”

These days, Nick’s body is healthy and strong, as showcased in all the shirtless pictures of the ripped star floating around – which only amuse his mother.

“I just giggle because I think, ‘You just give them what they want,’ ” she said with a laugh. “He has a beautiful body and I understand. And I’m proud of him. He’s got a really big heart. My kids have the biggest hearts. I love that they are adults and they are making their own choices now. I feel like we’ve done our job and I’m thrilled.”

After the event, Joe and Hadid continued their date night at The Abbey in West Hollywood with Nick and a group of friends.

“Gigi and Joe were sitting close together, playfully talking in each other’s ears most of the night,” says an onlooker. “They kissed after Gigi got up and danced to ‘Oops, I Did It Again.'”

The newly single singer was also in a good mood, “relaxing and having a good time” by the deejay booth, adds the source.
