Joan Kennedy, 64, ex-wife of Sen. Edward Kennedy and mother of Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy, pleaded guilty yesterday to drunken driving — her fourth DWI since 1974. She was sentenced to two years’ probation. She was quickly escorted in and out of a courtroom in Barnstable, Mass., where a judge ordered her to undergo alcohol counseling as part of her sentence. She was also told that her driver’s license could not be reinstated until she had completed her probation. Standing outside a polling place yesterday with her son, Kennedy told reporters, “What I did was wrong.”
