Max Baer Jr., who played the dimwitted bumpkin Jethro Bodine on TV’s “The Beverly Hillbillies” from 1962-71, said his proposed $130 million Beverly Hillbillies Mansion & Casino in Reno NV needs a 240-foot tall oil derrick with a 70-foot high flame. Neighbors and even the Federal Aviation Administration have objected. Reno officials want to limit the derrick to 60 feet, with a 20-foot flame that would be extinguished between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. “The purpose of this is to make a statement,” Baer said, “and you’re not making a statement with something that is 60 feet high.” Baer added that city officials should be happy he’s trying to do something to help Reno’s tourism-based economy.
