What better reason to indulge than a wedding anniversary?

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and husband Justin Mikita – who got married last July – celebrated the occasion by doing just that.

“We had a weekend of dinners,” Ferguson told PEOPLE at The Television Academy s Performers Peer Group Celebration of the 66th Emmy Awards in Beverly Hills on Monday. “We made a few reservations and we had a chef come over to our house on our actual wedding anniversary and cook us something. So we ate a lot.”

The Modern Family actor, 38, said the time has flown by since his wedding day.

“We can’t believe it’s already been a year,” he said. “We do sort of feel like newlyweds.”

As they continue to settle in to married life, Ferguson and Mikita, 28, have already started thinking about expanding their family, but don’t have any immediate plans.

“We are very excited to start a family,” said the Emmy nominee. “We don’t have any sort of timeline right now. When you have to look for alternate means, there’s a little more planning that has to go into that so who knows. When we start the process it might still be a three-year ordeal. We’ll see what happens!”
