Mixed reviews greet the star's new Sweetface label, though the glam items are praised
Two nights before belting out a duet with husband Marc Anthony at Sunday’s Grammys in Los Angeles, Jennifer Lopez showed off her Sweetface fashion line for next fall at New York Fashion Week.
And the verdict for a line that consisted largely of metallics, embellishment, high waists, loose shapes and lots and lots of fur? Better than expected, in some cases.
“I loved it. It was fabulous,” Vogue’s editor at large Andre Leon Talley told the Associated Press from his front row seat. “Everything was relevant because it looked like her.”
But Zandile Blay, an editor at Seventeen magazine, in assessing such casual items as jeans, belly-baring tops, striped scarves and zippered sweatshirts, told Reuters: “As I saw those items, all I saw was a J.C. Penney rack.”
As the show progressed, Lopez, 35, presented a look more glam, including crystal-studded skullcaps, a silk chiffon jumpsuit and a hooded floor-length fur cape in white.
“It’s a step up from her teen-age, pop line. It’s definitely more mature, and it’s more of a replica of what Jennifer does,” judged Metanoya Webb, an assistant editor at InStyle Magazine. “It was a reflection of her, and I liked that.”
Lopez told Women’s Wear Daily that her designer collection will be priced higher and have a more limited distribution than her 4-year-old J.Lo line of clothing and fragrances. Last fall, she launched the JLO by Jennifer Lopez lingerie line.
“Better than the clothes was really the presentation of the whole show,” Blay said of the evening, which featured Naomi Campbell strutting down the catwalk in halter-topped jumpsuit with tiered ruffles running down the legs and an enormously wide-brimmed mushroom-like white hat.
Lopez, the fashion editor said, “didn’t break any new ground, but she certainly confirmed her star status.”
