Jennifer Files for Divorce from Brad
The marriage of the power couple is officially over, as Aniston files papers on Friday
Jennifer Aniston officially filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday.
Aniston’s court papers cite irreconcilable differences for the split. The actress, who had legally changed her name to Pitt, also asked to have her former name restored, to Jennifer Joanna Aniston.
The two were married for four and a half years and have no children. It was the first marriage for both.
On Jan. 7 of this year, the actors released a joint statement to PEOPLE, saying: “We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate. For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration.”
They went on to say: “We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another. We ask in advance for your kindness and sensitivity in the coming months.”
Pitt, 41, met Aniston, 36, when they were set up on a dinner date in 1998. The pair kept their relationship under wraps for months, and eventually wed in a lavish ceremony in Malibu, Calif., on July 29, 2000.
This week, in her first interview since their separation was announced, Aniston said she has managed to “tune out” the “tough and nasty” press coverage about them, telling TV’s Access Hollywood, “There has been so much love and support. It feels real good.”
As for the irony of her next movie project being a romantic comedy called The Breakup, Aniston said: “Well, you know. I just figured, seize the moment.”
