Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux Split
The couple, who announced their engagement in August 2012, have called it quits
There will be no happily-ever-after for Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux.
The couple, who announced their engagement in August 2012, have split, PEOPLE has learned.
The breakup comes after the pair had been spending long stretches apart, with Theroux, 42, in New York, where he will be shooting his new HBO drama series The Leftovers next year. Meanwhile Aniston, 44 – who just chopped her famous locks and got a new ear piercing – has been prepping for her role in Horrible Bosses 2, now filming in L.A.
The two reunited briefly last week at their Los Angeles home before Theroux jetted to Robert Downey Jr.‘s star-studded fete outside San Francisco for his wife Susan s 40th birthday. According to an onlooker, Aniston was not spotted at the weekend festivities.
On Nov. 12, Aniston at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Theroux was staying, and the two had breakfast together. According to a witness, she appeared to be upset and in tears when she left. Later in the day, she returned to the hotel.
Earlier this year, the couple seemed to be settling into domestic bliss, having renovated Aniston’s $21 million estate in L.A.’s Bel Air neighborhood in hopes of “normalizing and nesting,” the actress told PEOPLE.
She threw a 42nd birthday party for Theroux at their new house in August. But then the relationship seemed to take a turn: “They went from spending 24/7 together in August and September, to spending a lot of time apart,” says an Aniston insider.
One possible source of friction: “He still prefers New York to Los Angeles,” the insider adds. “Justin has never seemed very comfortable in L.A.”
The couple first connected as costars on the set of the 2010 comedy Wanderlust. In May 2011, Aniston started stepping out with the versatile actor-screenwriter.
“From the beginning,” one source told PEOPLE, “Jen’s friends thought they were right for each other.”
For her part, Aniston couldn’t resist gushing about her fiancé, telling pal Chelsea Handler that she was “verklempt” by his proposal.
In February, the couple appeared to be the portrait of happiness attending the Oscars together.
Sporting her enormous engagement ring and with Theroux happily ceding the spotlight to her on the red carpet, the beaming actress was asked how she was feeling. “I feel great,” she told PEOPLE. “Wonderful!” At the time, a source said, wedding plans were well underway, with a spring date set and their bands being designed.
But the big day was pushed back, and their wedding plans proceeding only in fits and starts. As recently as September, though, Aniston was happily talking about new plans with pals, according to the insider.
Then wedding talk cooled down again. And in recent weeks, the actress seemed to have shifted her priorities. Says the insider: “Jen said she needed to focus on work.”
