After spending eight years sitting at a desk as Pam Beesley on The Office, Jenna Fischer was ready to jump into action, literally, for her next role.

In her new comedy, You, Me and the Apocalypse, kicking off Jan. 28 on NBC, Fischer got to do just that.

Fischer plays a librarian who is falsely imprisoned for treason. While in prison she befriends, hardened career criminal Leanne, played by Megan Mullally. When the two get the news the world is ending, they break out of prison and travel across the country to get home to their families.

“We were doing stunts and car chases,” Fischer tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue on stands now. “Megan and I would say, ‘is this what it feels like to be Tom Cruise?'”

Another perk of the job for Fischer was the chance to live in London for six months while filming.

“I wanted to have fun and see the world,” says Fischer. “I got to do just that with this show.”
