The news of the split came on the heels of Aniston's brief October reunion with Vaughn in the U.K. "After Jennifer's trip to London several weeks ago, Jennifer and Vince mutually agreed to end their relationship but continue to be good friends today," their reps told PEOPLE exclusively on Dec. 5. 02 of 08 DIVIDED THEY STAND inf(2) In recent months, the couple have led separate lives, with Aniston working on various projects in New York and Los Angeles and Vaughn shooting the movie Fred Claus in Europe. But the pair presented a united front, with the actress insisting she and Vaughn were still together during an Oprah Winfrey Show appearance last month and Vaughn threatening to sue several tabloids who alleged he was seen kissing another woman. 03 of 08 THE WAY THEY WERE LDP Images In the beginning: Sparks between Aniston and Vaughn first began to fly when the actors met on the Chicago set of The Break-Up in 2005. "We had that quick rapport," Aniston told British Elle of meeting her costar. "You get those moments pretty rarely." Vaughn agreed: "We had instant chemistry."' 04 of 08 IN CONTROL Eliot Press/Bauer-Griffin (2) Both Aniston and Vaughn (on a Parisian cruise in June) were coy about their budding romance from the start, even after being touchy-feely at the film's wrap party in the summer of 2005. "I think that's just my personal choice just to not talk about my relationship," Aniston told reporters. "Because listen, you're damned if you do, damned if you don't, and quite honestly, I think I would just prefer not to." 05 of 08 CAUGHT ON FILM Bauer-Griffin The pair kicked things up a notch in October 2005 when Aniston joined Vaughn in his native Chicago to catch his touring Wild West Comedy Show. He even brought her home to meet his mom and stepfather at their suburban Lake Forest home. "They are very loving," says a source who spent time with the cuddly pair. "So clearly a couple." 06 of 08 NO RING TO IT RAMEY This spring, the rumor mill went into overdrive with talk that Oprah Winfrey was planning to throw Aniston and Vaughn (at a Chicago Cubs game in June) an $8 million wedding. To quash the buzz, Aniston called into the Oprah Winfrey Show to say, "(The rumors) are so unbelievable." Once again in August, Aniston put to rest wedding talk. "I'm not engaged and I don't have a ring," she told PEOPLE. 07 of 08 FRIENDS & LOVERS BAUER-GRIFFIN Who could blame fans for wanting the rumors to be true? Theirs was a union rooted in friendship. Vaughn (left, in Las Vegas earlier this year) has said of Aniston: "She's the most sincere woman I know. She doesn't lie, she has a good heart." Aniston returned the compliment, telling Harper's Bazaar that Vaughn "is protective and very loyal to his family and friends." 08 of 08 MOVING ON Eliot Press/Bauer-Griffin Though their romance (in bloom in Paris in June) didn't last, a Vaughn friend told PEOPLE, "She's changed Vince for the better," adding that their relationship was more than a rebound after Aniston's split from Brad Pitt in January 2005. "They met at a time when she needed someone to make her smile. He did a really good job of lifting her spirits."
