Jen Schefft’s TV romance with The Bachelor’s Andrew Firestone may have fizzled, but now she’s getting another shot at love – in New York – as the next star of ABC’s The Bachelorette this fall, PEOPLE has confirmed.

Unlike past seasons of The Bachelorette, which were filmed in Southern California, Schefft, 28, will look for her Mr. Right in New York – and unlike previous Bachelorettes, she’ll also have a hand in the casting process.

She’ll start sorting through the eligible men on Aug. 13, with a casting call at New York’s Pacific Grill. The search will then continue with stops in Chicago, San Diego, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Miami.

“This show found (Bachelorette) Trista (Rehn) the man of her dreams and now it s my hope to find the one man with whom I can spend the rest of my life,” Schefft said in a statement. “My husband needs to be someone who is down-to-earth yet ambitious. I want us to be able to connect on all levels.”

Of course, Schefft has a long history with reality TV romance: She and Firestone, who hooked up during the show’s third season, broke off their 10-month engagement last December, though they both said the split was amicable. The two shared sushi in a restaurant in early February of this year. “I happened to be in Chicago and just checked in to see how Jen was,” Firestone told PEOPLE at the time. Schefft also dismissed the rumors, saying, “We are not getting back together.”

Then, this past April, Schefft was dating another reality show winner: Bill Rancic of The Apprentice. The TV personalities met at a charity event, then shared intimate dinners together in the Windy City, where they both live and work.

“They look like they’re a good match,” a source close to the pair told PEOPLE last spring – but the match didn’t last very long.

As a Bachelorette, Schefft stands a better chance at long-lasting love than her Bachelor counterparts – who have all split up with their women.

Bachelor castoff Trista Rehn became a Bachelorette, picking and then marrying firefighter Ryan Sutter. Meanwhile, Bachelor 4 reject Meredith Phillips is engaged to her Bachelorette 2 choice, Ian McKee.
