"Whereas other breakups don't always end so well, this one is very amicable," the LVL XIII brand ambassador says of ex Daphne Joy

He scored a Hot 100 hit dishing on how he likes when girls “Talk Dirty” to him – but Jason Derulo says he’s better at communicating through song lyrics than conversation.

On May 24, PEOPLE confirmed Derulo and girlfriend Daphne Joy split, and the singer says the breakup has already inspired new music.

“There’s one that I did last night that talks about it pretty spot-on,” the LVL XIII shoe designer and brand ambassador told PEOPLE exclusively on Monday. “I actually sent it to her, too. A lot of times, she’s like, ‘You don’t speak to me. You’re not talking to me. I don’t get it.’ So I wrote it in a song, and she was like, ‘It’s clearer now.'”

Derulo, 26, admits he struggled with communication in their relationship, but songwriting has been conducive to getting his message across.

“It’s crazy how that is. Sometimes we’re better at certain things,” he says. “Where somebody may be a better talker than me, through a song, I’m able to explain anything.”

Derulo and his actress-model ex, 29, dated for six months before calling it quits – but he maintains they’re “definitely” in a good place, post-split.

“We’re still really close, so it’s all good,” he says. “Whereas other breakups don’t always end so well, this one is very amicable.”

Derulo – who says he is preparing to release a Platinum Hits album, in addition to a writing and recording his fifth full-length – previously dated Jordin Sparks for three years before they ended their relationship in 2014.

Joy was once romantically linked to Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson; the two have a 3-year-old son, Sire, together.
