The "Want to Want Me" singer says single life has been "amazing"
Jason Derulo‘s single and ready to mingle – and he’d be the first one to tell you so!
The 25-year-old hints at the split while discussing his newfound independence.
“I’ve gotten a chance to really learn about myself and what I like and what I’m into, because sometimes you fall into something, and then you don’t really know what else is out there,” he says. “I had to relearn what else was out there and how other girls are, really.”
While the singer says he does find songwriting therapeutic (“Music is freedom. I feel free when I get to create”), he insists his upcoming fifth studio LP, due later this summer, isn’t a full-on breakup record. For proof, just see his latest single, “Want to Want Me,” a funky, ’80s-inspired come-on.
“I don’t dwell. I don’t stay in negativity,” says Derulo. “It’s been almost a year now, and I’m still recording new songs. It would be weird for me to dwell on a relationship that was two months into my recording process. It was on a decline for those two months, then the relationship was done, so I was making this album [to be] a breath of fresh air.”
Still, his new offering So You Think You Can Dance judge does address his relationship with Sparks – both the highs and the lows.
“It was a big deal. There is some elements of that relationship, the positives and the negatives, and some totally other, new stuff.”
