As big sister Britney hits the road with a blazing new arena show and a PR campaign to match, Jamie Lynn Spears is on a more mellow path: a source confirms to PEOPLE that the younger Spears, 17, is quietly pursuing a career as a country-music singer.

A star on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 until she announced her pregnancy in 2008, Spears gave birth to daughter Maddie last June. Since then, she has been raising her baby with fiancé Casey Aldridge in Mississippi. She attended Britney’s Circus tour kickoff March 3 in New Orleans.

Spears has spoken of her interest in singing as far back as 2002, when she told the Associated Press, “I’ll probably do a lot of acting first, then go to singing.” The then-11-year-old added confidently, “So when I do start singing, buy my album!”
