Jamie Foxx Scores Top TiVo Oscar Moment
Plus: Schwimmer's new TV gig, Coldplay hits road, and more
COUNTED: Jamie Foxx’s passionate recollection of his late grandmother during his Best Actor acceptance speech for Ray was the Oscar moment most replayed by TiVo digital video recorder customers, the company announced, basing its sample on 10,000 anonymous TiVo households. The second most-popular TiVo moment was Clint Eastwood’s Best Picture win for Million Dollar Baby. Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet proved the big TiVo stars of ABC’s pre-Oscar show. Blanchett’s arrival in a yellow Valentino gown was the most replayed red-carpet moment, followed by Winslet’s entrance in a blue Badgley Mischka dress.
ACCUSED: Lil’ Kim “flat-out lied” to a grand jury about a shootout at a New York radio station in 2001 to protect her former manager and a friend, federal prosecutor Daniel Gitner said in opening statements at the rapper’s perjury trial Tuesday. Kim (real name: Kimberly Jones) and her assistant testified that the manager was not at the station during the fight, in which one man was wounded. But the manager, Damion Butler, subsequently pleaded guilty to gun charges, the Associated Press reports. Defense attorney Mel Sachs suggested Lil’ Kim was too traumatized by the gun battle at rap radio station to recall every detail, arguing “a person can be incorrect and not intentionally lie.”
HIRED: Former Friends star David Schwimmer has a new gig, directing a FOX comedy pilot titled New Car Smell, says the Hollywood Reporter. Last season, Schwimmer directed and executive produced the NBC comedy pilot Nevermind Nirvana, though the show never made it to the network’s schedule. He has also directed episodes of the late, lamented Friends and its so-so spinoff, Joey, with Matt LeBlanc. In other pilot news, UPN has green-lighted a drama pilot titled South Beach to be executive produced by Jennifer Lopez. It reportedly concerns three young adults in South Beach.
HONORED: One of the world’s richest men bowed his head to the one of the richest women Wednesday, as Microsoft boss Bill Gates received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of donations his Gates Foundation has made to countries in the British Commonwealth. Not that Gates, 49, will be called “Sir,” since foreigners cannot use the title, except to add KBE (Knight of the British Empire) after their names. Gates attended the special ceremony at Buckingham Palace with his wife Melissa, and told reporters: “I am humbled and delighted. I’m particularly pleased that this honor helps recognize the real heroes our foundation supports to improve health in poor countries.”
SCHEDULED: Grammy-winning British band Coldplay, fronted by Chris Martin, have announced that they will release their as-yet untitled third album in June, followed by a world tour, which will kick off in their native UK later that month. “We’ve spent a long time in the studio and haven’t played a gig for 18 months so we can’t wait to get out on tour and play our new songs live,” said guitarist Jonny Buckland.
SUED: Peter Jackson’s production company claims New Line Cinema shortchanged the filmmaker on profits from part one in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, AP reports. Wingnut Films alleges in a federal lawsuit filed in Los Angeles that New Line and subsidiary Katja Motion Pictures failed to properly calculate revenue, including revenue from DVD sales, from 2001’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The suit doesn’t specific an amount sought in damages but claims the movie grossed more than $314 million in the U.S. and more than $556 million overseas, plus revenue from video and merchandise sales.
MATCHED: Darth Vader is coming to The O.C. The trailer for Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith will premiere during the March 10 episode of the FOX show. The final installment of the Star Wars saga will open in theaters on May 19. The new trailer will hit movie theaters beginning March 11. Sith continues the chronicle of young Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), who eventually turns to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader (who would look awfully out of place walking down the Newport Beach pier).
