James Spader as a maniacal robot?

The Emmy-winning actor, 53, has just been cast as the ultimate villain in the The Avengers: Age of Ultron, the upcoming sequel to the blockbuster, reports.

In Ultron, Spader will play a criminally insane robot with an array of abilities, like super-strength, flight and mind control, who is bent on destroying the human race, starting with the Avengers.

Director Joss Whedon recently told Entertainment Weekly however, that he plans on “stripping back some of Ultron s abilities” in order to find “a way to humanize – to some degree – the angry bot.”

Charismatic, human yet often unlikeable characters are a hallmark for Spader, who returns to TV this fall in the NBC drama Blacklist.

The film comes to theaters May 1, 2015, and reunites Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo.
